A Heart so Fierce and Broken book cover

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Series: Cursebreakers #2

Date of Publication: 7 January 2020

Synopsis

Find the heir, win the crown.

The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.

Win the crown, save the kingdom.

Rumored to be the heir, Grey has been on the run since he destroyed Lilith. He has no desire to challenge Rhen–until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother’s violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

Synopsis

If you were not a fan of the first book, I would definitely recommend you try reading the sequel.

This book no longer focuses on Harper and Rhen (yes!). I am glad because I didn’t really like those two, but they both make some appearances in this book (mostly in the beginning and end of the book).

The two main characters of this book are Grey, my favorite character from ACSDAL, and Lia Maria. Grey was the guard commander of Rhen’s forces and if you did not catch this from the last book, the true heir to the throne of Emberfall. Lia Maria is a new character. She is the eldest daughter of Karis Luran, Queen of Syhl Shallows.

I liked this book so much more than the first because of the new characters, romance, friendships, and sisterly love. Grey was my favorite character from the first book and hoped the second book would be written from his perspective and it was!

Lia Maria became one of my favorites too. Some new characters were introduced and liked them as well. The romance in this book was much better and I felt it was less forced. Also, there is no love triangle. It was very nice to see the bonding and friendships that grew between the characters. Lastly, sisterly love. At first, I thought Lia Maria would hate and be jealous of her sister, but she wasn’t. Both of them loved each other, despite their ranks.

Just like ACSDAL, there is a shocking cliffhanger.

Received ARC via Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.
